Grade 3 (Concert Band) -In simple terms, a flow state is a state of mind in which you become completely absorbed in what you are doing, with a deep sense of focus and an energetic drive to see the task through. When deciding what my next piece would be about, I turned to phrases in current pop culture that might resonate with young musicians without being so trendy or cheesy that a band director would turn away from the piece. I eventually settled on Flow State, a phrase that suggests a sense of maturity in what an individual, or in this case a young adult, might be doing, while also connecting to the countless TikTok and Instagram Reel memes I have seen surrounding the term. In this piece, I create an ethereal soundscape through the combination of a rock electric organ and a pedaled vibraphone. Together, these instruments create an unusual color that puts the mind at ease and invites us into that relaxed, deeply focused state of mind. Throughout the writing process, I constantly found myself hearing colors within the music. Some were blue, some were purple, and some were yellow. This form of “flow” became a way for me to communicate those ideas and share them with the ensemble. While listening to or rehearsing this piece, allow yourself to become absorbed in the music. Let go of the distractions around you, find your focus, and become a part of the Flow State.
