Question Mark Suite (Digital Score and Parts)

Grade 6 - Question Mark Suite (A work for Wind Band)

The Question Mark Suite by Ben Jaeckel is a deeply personal exploration of life's emotional journey, rooted in moments of longing, confusion, and desire. The first movement reflects the overwhelming rush of emotions when we encounter something powerful for the first time. The brass sections, with raw intensity and extreme trumpet ranges, capture the beautiful yet unreachable feelings of wanting, while the percussion adds a restless energy. The second movement shifts to a more playful and rhythmic tone, expressing a lighter joy that comes from discovering something new, but also recognizing that not all desires are meant to be realized. The mixed meters create a sense of freedom, but beneath the surface lies a bittersweet understanding that life, like music, is filled with ups and downs. The third movement reflects a time of personal isolation and the yearning for connection. It’s written with more soloistic passages, allowing space for introspection and self-expression, as the performer searches for clarity through fragmented sound. This movement is about longing for understanding, with no clear resolution—just a sense of searching for something elusive. The fourth movement is where the suite comes full circle. After struggling to find inspiration, I had found new creative energy in a close-knit group of friends, which brought a sense of joy and fresh perspective. This final movement incorporates fun, spontaneous moments, like quirky time signature changes, reflecting the playful, sometimes cringe-worthy experiences shared with friends. It’s a culmination of the emotional journey, where the piece comes back to the beginning but with new understanding. The suite ends with a literal period, symbolizing the completion of the circle—reflecting life’s constant ebb and flow, from uncertainty to resolution. The Question Mark Suite is not just about the emotions that shape us, but also about the people and experiences that guide us along the way. It’s a reflection of personal growth, of finding meaning through struggle, and ultimately, of life coming full circle. *If you are interested in buying only one movement, email me at benjaeckelcompositions@gmail.com for specialized pricing.

Limbitless (Physical Score and Digital Parts)

        Grade 3 - Concert Band

Limbitless was inspired by the story of a young girl named River, whose spirit and determination show that limits are often only things we imagine. River was born with a limb difference, and throughout her life she has shown again and again that being different does not mean being held back. For her, difference has become a source of strength, confidence, and new opportunities. When she was young, River learned how to do things her own way. Physical therapy helped her find her balance and develop skills, but it was her creativity and determination that helped her thrive. There were times when she felt unsure about standing out, especially when people focused more on her hand than on who she was. Over time though, she met others who were limb different like her and discovered a community where she felt instantly understood. She even helped begin an annual event in Wisconsin that brings limb different families together. Through these experiences she grew into someone who proudly believes that “different is awesome.” The title Limbitless was chosen because River approaches her life without limits. She climbs, plays, creates, and imagines just like anyone else, and often with even more excitement and joy. This piece reflects that journey. You may hear small moments of adversity, but they are overshadowed by bursts of confidence, color, and celebration. These musical moments echo the things that make River who she is, from her love of teal and aqua to her friendships, her family, and her belief that everyone deserves to be seen for who they truly are. River’s name reminds us that a river always finds its own way forward, carving its path even when the world around it changes. In the same way, Limbitless follows her strength, her kindness, and her ability to rise above the expectations placed before her. This piece is written for River and for anyone who has ever felt different. May it encourage us to look beyond appearances, to ask each other questions that matter, and to celebrate the unique paths we each take.

When You Leave... (Physical Score and Digital Parts)

            Grade 4 - Wind Symphony

When You Leave… is a piece that I want to be open for interpretation. I do not think it should have one set meaning, because I feel every performer should bring their own emotions into it. But as the person who wrote it, I know it is also my job to explain why I wrote this piece and why it turned out the way it did. Someone who was very close to me had to move away. From the moment I met this person, I knew that one day this would happen, and I had been preparing myself for it for a long time. When the time got closer, I wanted to make the most of it. We hung out, we did fun things, we went on adventures. But in the back of my mind there was always this question: what happens when you leave? That question, and the anxiety that came with it, is what I put into this piece. This piece is centered around D minor. It uses both minor and major chords to create a very solemn feeling. The main theme comes back over and over again to give that sense of knowing what is coming, even if you do not want it to. The piano has a big role in this piece. I believe the piano is one of the most beautiful instruments, but here I do not use it in a flowing, harmonic way. Instead, it provides a constant pulse. That pulse represents this person. They are beautiful, they are steady, they can be wild at times in ways that I love, and they are the motif that keeps repeating in my life. In the end, I chose to close on an F major chord, the relative major to D minor. That chord represents hope, because what lies ahead is the most exciting part.

For Our Future (Physical Score and Digital Parts)

This piece is written in four connected sections, each representing a different year of high school. Rather than telling a literal story, the music reflects the feeling of moving through those years and how excitement, routine, exhaustion, and anticipation shape the experience. The first section represents freshman year. It begins somewhat cautiously before quickly opening into something larger and louder. The music can feel bold and sometimes disjunct, filled with short ideas and bursts of energy. This captures the feeling of stepping into high school for the first time, when everything is new and full of possibilities. The second section reflects sophomore year. The music settles into a groove as routines begin to form and things start to feel more comfortable. Rhythms lock in, and the energy feels confident and steady, representing the point when high school begins to feel familiar and exciting at the same time. The third section represents junior year. The pace continues forward, but the character becomes more subdued. Lines thin out and the music feels more restrained, suggesting the exhaustion that often comes with the busiest year. Even so, the motion never fully stops. The final section represents senior year and brings the piece back toward the energy of the beginning. The groove feels more natural now, and the excitement returns as attention shifts toward what comes next. The piece ends with a sense of arrival while still leaving space for the next chapter beyond high school.
